Once, a Fisherman lived with his Wife in a pigsty. One day, while fishing, he caught a big fish. It said, “I am not a Fish, but an enchanted prince. Please let me go.” The Fisherman felt sorry and let it go.
However, his Wife wanted him to ask the Fish to give them a hut. The Fisherman did so, and the Fish granted her wish. Thereafter, the Wife wanted a big castle.
The Fish granted that wish, too.
The Wife, next, wanted to be the Queen. So, the Fish made her the Queen. The Wife then, said, “I want to be the Empress of this kingdom.” The Fish fulfilled her wish.
Then, the Wife said, “I wish to be God.” When the Fisherman went to the Fish with this request, it said, “That is impossible!
She is only fit to live in a pigsty!” Thus, the Fisherman and his Wife continued to live in a pigsty all their lfe!
Frau Trude
There was once a stubborn young Girl, who never obeyed her parents. One day, the Girl wanted to meet a woman known as Frau Trude. However, the Girl’s parents felt that Frau Trude was a wicked woman. They stopped her from meeting Frau Trude.
The Girl did not listen to them and went to Frau Trude’s house. There, she saw a black coal miner, a green man who was a hunter and a red man who was a butcher.
And Frau Trude seemed to look like the devil herself! So the Girl told Frau Trude about her fears.
Frau Trude laughed and said that she had wanted the girl from a long time. Then, turning her into a block of wood, Frau Trude threw it into the fire. She then warmed herself by the fire, happy that it was burning very brightly!
The Golden Children
Once, a poor Fisherman caught a magical fish. The fish gave him two Gold Children and two Golden Lilies. Fish told him that the Lilies would bloom if the Children were safe.
The Gold Children soon grew up and left home. People laughed at them as they were made of gold. One of the Gold Children became sad and returned home. The other went on his journey. Soon, he married a beautiful lady.
One day, the Gold Boy went to the forest for hunting. There, he was chasing a stag when he met a Witch. The Witch turned him into stone.
The other Gold Boy saw that one of the Lilies was dying. He understood that his brother was in danger. He set out to save him Soon, he reached the forest and found the evil Witch. He forced her to bring his brother back to life. The brothers returned home happily.
God’s Justice
Once, there lived a lonely Old Woman. All her loved ones were dead. She was very sad and blamed God for her loss. One night, the Old Woman could not
sleep and sat thinking about her two dead sons.
When the church bells rang for prayer, the Old Woman got ready and went to the church. When she reached the church, she was surprised to see it filled with a strange glow.
Suddenly, she realized that the people sitting in the church were her dead relatives! By the altar, she saw her two sons. One was hanging on the gallows, and the other bound to the wheel.
One of her dead aunts said, “That would have been the fate of your sons if they had lived!”
The Old Woman thanked God for having dealt with her more kindly than she had been able to understand. Soon after, she died peacefully.
The Raven
One day, a Man was walking through a forest. As, he sat under a tree to rest, a Raven started talking to him. She narrated her tale, sadly.
She was a Princess trapped under a spell. To free her, the Man had to rescue her from a castle at Stormberg. Then, she flew away, leaving him with a ring.
The Man searched far and wide. At last, he found the castle on a glass mountain. He slipped as he tried to climb it. Disappointed, he entered a cave near the mountain, There, he saw a bag. The bag had magic boots and a stick. He walked up the mountain in the boots.
He opened the door by knocking on it with the stick. He found a beautiful maiden sitting inside. Joyfully, he gave her the ring. The spell was broken. The Princess married the Man and they lived happily thereafter.
