A long time ago, there was a little village called Sleepy Hollow. It was a quiet place, but people said it was full of spooky stories. The scariest story was about a ghost called the Headless Horseman.

One day, a schoolteacher named Ichabod Crane came to Sleepy Hollow. Ichabod was very tall and thin, with a long nose and messy hair. He looked a bit funny, like a scarecrow! But Ichabod was a nice man. He taught the children well and was very polite to everyone in the village. The moms liked him because he always complimented their cooking.
Now, Ichabod had a big dream. He wanted to marry Katrina Van Tassel, a pretty girl who was also the daughter of a very rich farmer. Katrina had lots of admirers because she was kind and beautiful. Many boys liked her, but Ichabod was determined to win her heart.
There was one problem—Brom Bones. Brom was strong, brave, and loved playing tricks. He also liked Katrina and didn’t want Ichabod to marry her. Brom wasn’t mean, but he didn’t like competition. So, he came up with a plan to scare Ichabod away.

One night, Katrina’s family threw a big Halloween party. Everyone danced, laughed, and told spooky stories. Brom told the scariest story of all—about the Headless Horseman. He said the ghost rode his horse every night, looking for his lost head. According to Brom, if someone crossed the old bridge by the cemetery, the ghost would chase them!
After the party, Ichabod rode home alone. The night was dark and creepy. The trees looked like shadows with long arms, and every sound made Ichabod jump. He kept thinking about Brom’s story of the Headless Horseman.

Suddenly, Ichabod heard hoofbeats behind him. He turned and saw a huge black horse—and on it was a rider without a head! Ichabod’s heart raced. He kicked his horse and galloped as fast as he could. The Headless Horseman chased him, laughing and swinging a pumpkin in the air.
Ichabod saw the old bridge ahead. “If I can cross the bridge, the ghost will disappear!” he thought. He pushed his horse to go even faster. Just as Ichabod reached the bridge, the Headless Horseman threw the pumpkin at him. It hit Ichabod, and everything went dark.
The next morning, the villagers found Ichabod’s hat and a smashed pumpkin near the bridge. But Ichabod was gone! Some people said the ghost had taken him away. Others thought Ichabod was so scared that he ran far away and never came back. Brom Bones married Katrina soon after. And though some villagers heard rumors that Ichabod was living in another town, most people believed the Headless Horseman had gotten him.
Moral: Don’t let fear control you. Sometimes, people tell scary stories to trick you. Be brave and face your fears because they are often not as real as they seem!
